In today’s world, your browser is your gateway to the internet, and as such it is always updating and adapting to changes in standards and patching vulnerabilities that could expose you to harm.

With that being said, it is very important to keep your browser up to date, and below we’ll show you how to do that in each browser, but first, we must state that most modern browsers auto-update, but do require you to close the browser once an update has been downloaded in order to apply it.

Google chrome

Get a Chrome update when available

Normally updates happen in the background when you close and reopen your computer’s browser. But if you haven’t closed your browser in a while, you might see a pending update:

  1. On your computer, open Chrome.
  2. At the top right, look at More More.
  3. If an update is pending, the icon will be colored:
    • Green: An update was released less than 2 days ago.
    • Orange: An update was released about 4 days ago.
    • Red: An update was released at least a week ago.

To update Google Chrome:

  1. On your computer, open Chrome.
  2. At the top right, click More More.
  3. Click Update Google Chrome.
    • Important: If you can’t find this button, you’re on the latest version.
  4. Click Relaunch.

The browser saves your opened tabs and windows and reopens them automatically when it restarts. Your Incognito windows won’t reopen when Chrome restarts. If you’d prefer not to restart right away, click Not now. The next time you restart your browser, the update will be applied.

Mozilla Firefox

  1. Click the menu button Fx57Menu , click Fx57Help Help and select About Firefox.
  2. The About Mozilla Firefox window opens. Firefox will check for updates and download them automatically.Fx70aboutFirefox-Downloading
  3. When the download is complete, click Restart to update Firefox.

Important: If the update didn’t start, didn’t complete or there was some other problem, you can go to the Systems & Languages page to download and install the latest version of Firefox for your system and language or you can use this download link (see How to download and install Firefox on Windows for more information).

Stay safe: Download only from the official Mozilla links above to avoid malware and other online threats.
